| To sign up for a class, go to http://www.iat.gov/ and log into that website. If the minimum number of people
are not signed up by the Monday before the class date, the class will
be canceled. There is no charge for any of the classes. All classes
will be held at the Aviation Management building at 4405 Lear Court,
Room 221, in Anchorage, AK starting at 8:00 a.m. For Basic and
Refresher classes held at field locations, a pilot and aircraft will be
available during the day of the class. |

| Course Descriptions |
1. Basic (B-3) (8 hours) (Maximum
class size-30; Minimum-6)
Basic Airplane and Helicopter Safety -
Covers employee safety while working in and around airplanes and
helicopters. Topics include: airplane and helicopter capabilities and
limitations, crash survival, personal protective equipment, accident
analysis, personal survival vests and floatation devices, emergency
locator transmitters, Departmental/agency aviation policies and
procedures, and procuring aviation resources. This class is for those
people who have not had aviation safety training before. Personnel who
want to participate in special use flight activities (e.g., flights
under 500 feet) or function as aircrew members (e.g., observe,
photographer, radio tracker, survey recorder) must take this class
before flying. Meets the requirement of OPM 00-4.5A.

2. Refresher (8 hours) (Maximum
class size-30; Minimum-6) (Prerequisite-Basic)
Refresher Airplane and Helicopter Safety -
Employees who fly and have had the Basic class are required to take a
refresher class every 3 years. Topics covered will be similar to the
Basic class, but in more specific detail and includes updated aviation
safety and policy information. Required once every 3 years. Meets the
requirement of OPM 00-4.5A.

3. Dunker (4 hours) (Maximum class
size-12; Minimum-8) (Prerequisite-Basic)
Employees learn how to safely escape an
aircraft that is submerged, use a life raft properly, and learn
survival information. It is highly recommended to have 1 hour classroom
training prior to the pool session. During the pool session
participants should plan to wear clothing/personal protective equipment
they typically wear while flying. Recommended for anyone who flies in
float equipped aircraft and/or does over water flying.

4. Fuel Handling (4 hours)
(Maximum class size-20; Minimum-6) (Prerequisite-Basic)
Employees will learn proper fuel storage,
transportation, and handling procedures; safe dispensing and filtering
techniques; and proper fuel cache/field site fuel handling. Recommended
for anyone involved in fuel handling for airplanes or helicopters,
especially in field locations.

5. Sling Loads (4 hours) (Maximum
class size-20; Minimum-10) (Prerequisite-Basic)
Employees will learn proper procedures,
techniques, and policies for safely attaching and transporting cargo
via sling using helicopters.

6. Pinch Hitter (8 hours
classroom; 2-4 hours flight time) (Maximum class size-20; Minimum-8)
(Prerequisite-Basic)
Employees will learn the basics of flying an
airplane in order to land an airplane should the pilot become
incapacitated. Includes 2-4 hours of actually flying an airplane with
emphasis on avoiding a stall and landing the aircraft in a controlled
manner. Recommended for employees who fly a lot as part of their job
such as biologists, park rangers, etc. There is no charge for the
classroom portion, but the employee's agency will have to pay for the
flight time (approximately $160/hour, including fuel).

7. Aviation Management Training
for Supervisors (M-3) (5 hours) (Maximum class size-20; Minimum-4)
A briefing designed to provide senior-level
managers and top management officials with a broad understanding of the
Departmental Aviation program and policies. Emphasis is placed on
specific responsibilities, liabilities, and risk management issues as
well as their interface with aviation managers at Bureau and
Departmental levels. Meets the DOI requirement of OPM 00-4.5B.

8. Aviation Conference and
Education (ACE)
The Aviation Conference and Education (ACE)
includes 36 Interagency Aviation Training 2000 modules. In addition,
Interagency Aviation Trainer refresher training will be offered. The
ACE will offer sessions similar to "Super Sessions" of the past. The
ACE will offer training modules in one hour time blocks allowing the
attendees to select the modules that best fit their needs. A complete
listing of the modules offered as well as training requirements for the
aviation position described in Aviation Training 2000 can be found on

9. IAMS (Interagency Aviation
Management and Safety) (40 hours)
IAMS is designed for full-time and
collateral duty managers who have aviation management and coordination
responsibilities for their units but lack strong aviation backgrounds.
IAMS is a week long training course to give mid-level managers the
information needed to manage safe and effective aviation programs.
Responding to the needs of those who have aviation management
responsibility at the regional and state levels, IAMS emphasizes
administration, safety, operations, and program monitoring. IAMS
teaches how to develop and manage aviation training, safety, and
accident prevention programs and how to plan, implement, and monitor
daily aviation operations. In addition, IAMS familiarizes participants
with other agency aviation roles, responsibilities, policies, and
regulations.

10. S-217 (Interagency Helicopter
Training) (40 hours)
This course provides basic knowledge and
skills required by individuals who will be working with helicopters.
The skills taught relate to fire and non-fire project assignments.
Topics include: duties of helicopter crewmembers; helicopter safety;
transportation/loading of personnel, cargo, and hazardous materials;
helicopter performance/limitations; paracargo retrieval; fueling; and
helibase organization and operations. Course touches on contract
administration, record-keeping, pilot flight/duty limitations and
flight regulations. This is required training for individuals seeking
"red card" certification as Helicopter Crewmember.

11. S-270 (Basic Air Operations)
(16 hours)
This course affords the trainee a survey of
uses of aircraft in fire suppression and provides trainees instruction
on how to conduct themselves in and around aircraft. The course also
deals with management policy, regulations, and procedures which govern
agency aviation operations in fire suppression. It will familiarize the
trainee with tactical and logistical uses of aircraft in fire
suppression as well as describe the specifications for helicopter
landing areas.

12. Aerial Firing Training (40
hours)
This course is designed as refresher
training for qualified Plastic Sphere Dispenser operators, Western
Helitorch Module leaders and operators, and helicopter pilot
certification. Course will present updated information, new procedures
and hone the skills of operators and pilots. Attendance at this course
is mandatory for those who wish to maintain currency in the use of
Aerial Firing devices. New nominees will be allowed in the course based
on agency demand for operators.
